Cole Custer will not race in the cup series next year, instead, he will race in the Xfinity series alongside Riley Herbst, for Stewart Hass Racing. The 24-year-old has been demoted to race in the second tire series after two inconsistent seasons with the Ford team.
The 2020 Rookie of the year will be replaced by 32-year-old Ryan Preece. He is a former JTDG Racing cup driver, who has been running part-time in all three national series for the last couple of years. He will join forces with Aric Almirola, Chase Briscoe, and Kevin Harvick for the championship fight next year.
Cole Custer, who is the son of senior SHR official Joe Custer was offered the cup contract after two incredible Xfinity seasons. He secured consecutive P2 finishes in the championship and SHR was quick to get his signature. He proved he was worth every penny they spend that year by securing a playoff with a win in Kentucky. But he failed to perform at the same level in the last two years.
He finished P25 in the championship standings this year with an average finish below 15. He never even came close to competing for a win this season while his teammate Chase Briscoe secured a Round of 12 finish. Veteran Kevin Harvick had 2 wins with a similar setup. The most disappointing stat is that he hasn’t finished inside the top 5 for over two years.
