Kyle Larson scores his first win at Martinsville

2021 Cup series champion Kyle Larson has once again proved why he is regarded as the best in business. The No:5 Hendrick Motorsport Chevy Camaro ZL1 led 30 laps in the race to secure his second win of the season. He was the only Chevy to finish inside the Top 5 on Sunday. It’s Larson’s 21st Cup win and 15th with HMS.

Larson became the only multi-race winner of 2023 than teammate William Byron thanks to an ambitious tire strategy by the No:5 crew. His crew chief Cliff Daniels decided to go for a late two-tire pit stop. The call proved to be the right one as he was able to earn a solid gap to Joey Logano, who finished P2. He finished 4 seconds ahead of Logano, who also had an impressive day.

I feel like (crew chief Cliff Daniels), and everybody did a great job all day on pit road, making the right calls and having great pit stops, and it all kind of worked out for me there at the end. We had a great car. That was the best my car had been,’’ said Larson after the win.

The win was pretty special for Larson, who had never won a race as he had never been close to a victory lane finish. His best finish before Sunday was a third-place run, one of his three top 5s at the most challenging short track. Larson now has established himself as a front-runner for the 2023 title and has already redeemed himself for underachieving in 2022.

JGR drivers Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin, who were among the top driver of the day, finished P3 and P4. Chase Briscoe, who broke his finger last Sunday, secured another P5 leading 109 laps. Aric Almirola, Ryan Blaney, Ricky Stenhouse, Bubba Wallace, and Chase Elliott secured the reaming spot in the top 10, respectively.
