“Polish a turd, it’s still a turd,” NASCAR Twitter reacts to Mike Kelley’s return as Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s crew chief
Mike Kelley and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Mike Kelley, the current JTG Daugherty Racing Competition Director, has officially joined the No:47 team as crew chief. He will lead Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the 2023 season, replacing Brian Pattie. Pattie left the Chevy team to reunite with his former driver Kyle Busch in the No:51 KBM truck series crew.
Mike Kelley and Stenhouse Jr go way back, as the former was one of the primary reasons behind the youngster’s rise to the premier series. Kelly previously won consecutive Xfinity series titles with Stenhouse and was his crew chief when he made the cup debut.
Kelly hopes to deliver results next year for the team with Stenhouse, using the knowledge from their previous success. He said, “We learned a lot together, and I believe the previous successes and failures give us the knowledge we need to be competitive and deliver the results for our partners in the coming season.”
Stenhouse Jr is ready for their reunion and postseason preparations to be productive next season. He said, “Mike and I and the team will continue our preparations this offseason and be ready for the new year with our Kroger Racing partners,”.
How NASCAR Twitter reacted to Mike Kelley and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. reunion
Fans on Twitter had a mixed reaction to the announcement that came early in the off-season. Some fans agreed with the change and suggested it was the right thing to do. Some were less convinced about the change because, according to them, Stenhouse’s poor performance was dragging the team down, not the car setup or crew chief.
