Ty Gibbs is one of the most controversial drivers in NASCAR. Joe Gibbs’s grandson cemented that spot again with his absurd action at Martinsville. He wrecked his teammate, Brandon Jones, in the final lap to win the race. The win also knocked out Jones from the playoffs. Instead of cheers, the No:54 driver was booed by the fans during the victory celebration.
Brandon Jones, who will join JR Motorsports at the end of this season, was in a must-win situation. So, he took the lead in the final restart with two laps left. Gibbs, who had already secured the Championship 4 entry, was running behind him. To everyones surprise, Gibbs made a dirty move on Jones and wrecked him to take the lead.
Ty Gibbs insisted in his post-race interview that his move were clean, and he just moved Jones out of the way to win. He said, “It was definitely not a clean move. I definitely didn’t want to wreck him, but I definitely wanted to move him out of the groove so I could win. I felt like we lost the spring race getting moved by him,”.
Later in his media interaction, Gibbs made another controversial comment. He compared the hatred he got to what Jesus faced in his time. He added that he likes to silence people with his win. Gibbs said, “Jesus was hated first and among all the people. That’s a part of it, I feel, just silencing out the crowd,”.
Brandon Jones called out Ty Gibbs for the controversial move
Brandon Jones is clueless on why Ty Gibbs pulled such a move on him. He said in his post-race interview, “I know Ty enough to where I know he doesn’t care about what he did. He’s pretty much, well—he wasn’t ‘pretty much’—he was locked into the next round. So really, what did that do?”.
Unlike him, Jones claims that Ty Gibbs might get some extra satisfaction from wrecking people for the win. He said, “I don’t really understand the move. I understand trying to get aggressive—you want to win the race. But to just destroy the race car, I don’t see it. I don’t get any satisfaction from it. Maybe he does,”.
The No:19 JGR driver claims he never liked to win races like Gibbs. He said, “Maybe he likes to win that way? But I never have and never felt strong about racing that way. So, we’ll just take it and go for it,”.
What Ty Gibbs did at Martinsville is pure disrespect to a teammate. It’s hard to speak in support of his deeds. The lack of respect shows the immaturity of the driver. He is not ready to race full-time in the cup series. Gibbs has a long way to go if he wants to regain the respect, of fans, he lost .
