Joe Gibbs Racing has announced the promotion of the youngster Ty Gibbs to the cup series. Ty Gibbs will drive the No:54 Camry in the cup series next year. He will take over the No:18 team’s garage space. The No:18 driver Kyle Busch, a two-time cup champion for the team, announced his exit from TRD in September. He joined their rival RCR.
Joe Gibb’s grandson is the reigning Xfinity series champion. He earned his maiden NASCAR title dominating the season with seven wins and 23 top-10 finishes. He is known for his aggressive driving attribute that earned him the title of one of the dirtiest drivers on the grid. His off-track antics have also earned him the title of an entitled youngster.
The Gibbs family is currently mourning the death of Coy Gibbs, Ty’s father, and JGR Co-owner. He passed away the very next day of the youngster’s Xfinity series triumph. The news of young Gibbs earning a cup promotion will motivate the family to move on from the tragedy. Ty has the opportunity to honor his father’s NASCAR legacy by performing well in his rookie season.
Ty Gibbs is no stranger to the cup series and already has 15 cup starts under his belt. All of his cup outings came this year for 23X1 Racing after he replaced veteran Kurt Busch who was sidelined after suffering a concussion. In his 15 starts, he secured one top-10 finish and 6 top 20’s.
Who will be Ty Gibbs’s crew chief for the 2023 cup season?
Ben Beshore has been the crew chief of the No:18 JGR crew that was represented by Kyle Busch on track. He will not be the crew chief of Ty as the youngster’s No:54 is set to be managed by Chris Gayle. Beshore might take over the JGR Xfinity crew next season and the team is yet to announce a new driver signing.
Chris Gayle led the No:54 team to the 2022 Xfinity series title. He played a big part in all the 7 wins Gibbs was able to secure this season. He previously worked in the cup series for JGR as the crew chief of Erik Jones. He has two cup race wins under his belt.
