“We just got into someone else’s mess,” William Byron on the disappointing end to his Atlanta return
William Byron
NASCAR visited the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the second time this season, where the 1.5-mile intermediate track that had been converted to a superspeedway saw Georgia native and No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott win the race precisely 30 years after his father, NASCAR great Bill Elliott, had done it. Under the yellow flag, Ross Chastain ended in second place behind Elliott, while Team Penske rookie Austin Cindric took second place.
Though Hendrick Motorsports garage was happy about the win of Chase Elliott, as he brought in the 7th win of the season for the team none of its other drivers were able to put forth a concrete performance at the track. Kyle Larson, the reigning Cup Champion was the only other driver from HMS to finish the race as both Alex Bowman and March Atlanta Cup Race winner William Byron failed to finish the race.
Alex Bowman was spun due to a tire failure while at the same time William Byron was collected in the crash that involved No:15 and No:42 cars which saw him getting admitted into in-field care. The third stage end to the runs of William Byron who had good short at a front raw finish was a definite disappointment for the team.

William Byron acknowledged that he had a fine day of racing through the track and had less grip to offer. He added that he No:24 was good and had a definite chance at finishing within the top 5. He added that he had a bit of trouble with the four-tire pit stop which made him enter the race at the back which eventually ended in him getting into someone else mess.
“The racing was fine. I thought the track had a little bit less grip. Our No. 24 Axalta Chevy was good out front. We could hang around the top five. We struggled a little bit there on the pit stop sequence. We took four tires and we started way back, and we just got into someone else’s mess,” William Byron said.
William Byron went on to add that they thought they got in the way back on track after the pit stop after they misjudged the other drivers’ plan to stay out. He added that it was unfortunate for them to start at 19 or 18 at the restart which eventually got him into the wreck saying “We were eighth to finish the stage. Thinking that in the final stage some guys would stay out, we just seemed to net out further back than we thought we would. We ended up like 18th or 19th and had to restart there, and that’s where the wreck happened. It was just unfortunate that we were back there,”.
William Byron went on to explain that they didn’t have anything to do as they took the right-sided tires in the earlier pit stop, which got pretty old. He added that the No:24 car hovered around the top 8 all day unfortunately they were out of the race at end.
“I don’t know if there is anything we could have really done because we had taken right-side tires before then and our tires were pretty old. We kind of hovered around the top-eight all day and unfortunately, we’re out. Thank you to Axalta, Chevrolet, and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports. We’ll keep working hard and it will change soon,” William Byron explained.
