“We started the race much further back in the field than we had hoped,” Austin Dillon talks about his almost perfect run after a disappointing qualifier at WWTR
Austin Dillon
Austin Dillon who drives the No.3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Richard Childress Racing as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series contender and as a part-time racer in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driving the No.20 Chevrolet Silverado for Young’s Motorsports had a tough time during the qualifier of the maiden Cup Series event Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway inaugurated by NASCAR legend Richard Petty prior to the practice.
Austin Dillon had a pretty impressive run at the main 300 miles event given the fact that he managed to start 29th and caught up pretty well finishing 15th and he was almost about to get spun with a near-miss rear end from Ross Chastain off turn 4 in lap 101 as they ran three-wide with Chase Elliott spinning out instead, Dillon has posted seven top 10s and three top 15s with no victory this season.
“If we would have made our car tighter earlier, we could have had a different day,” says Austin Dillon following the changes done to his car
Austin Dillon spoke to the press beginning with appraising his team’s efforts on the track and then went on to talk about his unfortunately poor performance in the qualifier and also the Next-Gen car struggling to stay balanced throughout the winds and he fell prey to the dirty air.
“This No. 3 Get Bioethanol team never gave up today at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. We started the race much further back in the field than we had hoped after qualifying didn’t go as well as expected, and that made the day challenging with how aero-dependent this track is. We just struggled in dirty air all day,” said Austin Dillon.
He further added by saying that he also struggled with the car towards the late end of the race and made a major change to his car which benefitted him and concluded by saying that if those problems had been recognized and averted earlier, the result would’ve been different and he also achieved a milestone of 20 million miles with his car.
“We made a big adjustment to tighten the handling of our Chevy late in the race, and it really helped. In hindsight, if we would have made our car tighter earlier, we could have had a different day. It was great to be able to bring NASCAR to St. Louis, and especially to do so while celebrating 20 Million NASCAR Miles on Sunoco Green e 15 with everyone at Growth Energy,” concluded Austin Dillon.
With Austin Dillon’s performance so far this season, he stands 16th in the points table and a win in the coming few races left will do him so much good.
