“What about all the teams that just spent a lot to get in?” Denny Hamlin rhetorically questions JR Motorsports’ entry into the NASCAR Cup Series
Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Denny Hamlin aka ‘Denny Dynamite’ currently competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series sporting the No.11 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing while also co-owning a Cup Series team, 23X1 Racing which fields Bubba Wallace and Kurt Busch in the No.s 23 and 45 Toyota Camry TRDs and along with Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and he seemed rather unhappy with and concerned when NASCAR Xfinity Series team JR Motorsports owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister Kelley Earnhardt Miller announcing their plans to race in the Cup Series in 2023.
With the JR Motorsports co-owners revealing their newfound desire which NASCAR Hall of Famer Earnhardt Jr. did not seem to have before, nevertheless to make it happen, NASCAR must consider extending their actively in-use team charter system which Hamlin found to be unjustifiable at this point and the three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin seemed to have nothing against Earnhardt wanting to enter the top-tier NASCAR Series but what troubled him was the passage required to enter the Cup Series.
“You gotta give credit to those who made the financial investment years ago,” Denny Hamlin questions the integrity of the sport for existing teams
The Twitter account of a merchandise brand Couch Racer left a tweet saying that there’s a way for JRM to enter the Cup Series saying that can happen when NASCAR expands the team charter system from 36 and return to fielding 43 cars and also added saying that when team owners like Dale and Kelley Earnhardt eye on the Cup Series, it’s a sign from above that changes are imminent and also added that the team can propose a Fair Market Value/FMV to be paid to existing top teams in points.
“Hey, NASCAR let’s expand the team charter system from 36 to 40 and go back to 43 car fields. When team owners like @DaleJr and Kelley say they want in that’s a sign expansion is needed, there’s a way. And every “team” doesn’t contribute to the “value” of the sport the same. What are you willing to pay for a third charter? Bet that’s close to FMV,” tweeted the Couch Racer account which soon grabbed Denny Hamlin’s attention.
Denny Hamlin is never one to back down without leaving his opinion out there and he did the same with the tweet inquiring as to what would happen to the teams that have invested and have been running for years and thought they were onto something, Hamlin concluded by saying that he would certainly appreciate and welcome Dale’s entry into the Cup Series but the path by which he enters remains crucial to Denny.
“What about all the teams that just spent a lot to get in? You have a point with your first statement but you gotta give credit to those who made the financial investment years ago, I think we all agree that DaleJr would be a great asset to cup ownership but the path in probably needs to be the same as it was for everyone else no?” responded Denny Hamlin.
However, there’s surely going to be a Cup Series debut from JRM and what matters right now is when and how, and will Denny Hamlin find peace with that?
