Legacy Motor Club, the NASCAR Cup Series team co-owned by Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher, has announced the signing of 2003 Cup champion Matt Kenseth as a competition advisor. It’s one of the major changes made to the Cup side this year. The team might be banking on the move to give them an advantage going into Toyota satellite in 2024.

While talking about the move, the champion driver pointed out that the Legacy move is aimed at helping the team to have a smooth transition to Toyota. He sees it as a great opportunity for him and his close friend Johnson to use their leadership skills to help the team thrive. Kenseth added that he is looking forward to what they can achieve together.

Jimmie and I have so much respect for each other as both competitors and friends – we are alike in many ways and at similar points in our careers. This is a great opportunity for me to be a resource for two extremely talented drivers and help on the racing operations side with this transition to Toyota. I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish together,” said Kenseth in a statement released by LMC.

The NASCAR Hall of Famer is one of the most successful and respected drivers in the sport’s history. He was recently included in the list of the 75 greatest drivers of the sport alongside Johson. He has won 39 races in his career before retiring in 2020. Kenseth also has scored 331 top-10s and 182 top-5s from 697 Cup starts.

What does Jimmie Johnson have to say about Matt Kenseth’s signing?

Jimmie Johnson, while talking about signing Kenseth, who is “not only is Matt an excellent driver and a fierce competitor, he’s also a great friend,” pointed out that it’s an alliance that makes so much sense. He claimed that his previous experience with Kenseth while driving for JGR and his comparative nature and experience were factors in this decision.

This alliance makes so much sense. Matt is extremely smart, has worked with Toyota while racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, and is still as competitive as ever. He’s a natural-born athlete and as fit as I have ever seen him. I’m so glad he is willing to share his knowledge and experience with us, and we look forward to all Matt has to offer,” Johnson said.

The legendary driver will join the team with immediate effect and will be hoping to help the team produce some solid performance with four races left in the season. He can help former JGR driver Erik Jones and part-timer Carson Hocevar on and off the track with the car sets and racing insights.
