The 2022 cup season ended in Phoenix with a bang. Joey Logano, who secured the first race win in the Next-Gen car, won the season finale and secured his second cup Championship. But, to the disappointment of many watching the finale live coverage via NBC, a familiar voice was missing.

NBC Sports Pundit and Legendary crew chief Steve Letarte, one of the most highly regarded commentators in the arcing community, wasn’t there to cover the historic event. Letarte missed out on the chance to cover the 2022 finale along with his former driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. as he was recovering from an appendectomy that was performed on him just hours before the final.

Steve Letarte took to Twitter to announce his absence before the race. He Tweeted, “Very little in the world would keep me from broadcasting the Championship race from Phoenix. Well…. Apparently, an emergency appendectomy has done the trick. Thank you to Saint Joseph’s hospital and everyone who helped me out,”.

Letarte was responsible for in-depth analysis of the strategic side of the racing, and his fellow commentators often relied on him to give a qualified opinion. However, Dale Jr. and Jeff Burton did a commendable job stepping up in the absence of Letarte.
