Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron has confirmed that he will do everything possible to give his teammates Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott a shot at victory at the 2023 regular-season finale at Daytona. Both drivers can’t make it to the playoff on points and desperately needs a win to secure a spot over Bubba Wallace.
For both Bowman and Eliott, it’s important NASCAR milestones at stake going into the finale, and a failure to win will make the 2023 season the worst of their Cup regular season career. The No:9 Chevy driver hasn’t missed the last 16 since starting his career as a full-time Cup driver, while Bowman has also never missed the playoffs driving for HMS. Either one or both of these streaks will be history next Saturday.
William Byron, who has won five Cup races this season, including the last Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen, said that he would try to help his teammates achieve the win as the Superspeedway is the best place for teammates to help each other, given both are running at equal pace. The championship contender added that he will have an aggressive approach for the event in Daytona.
“Just try to help those guys as much as we can. Superspeedways is really the place that we can help the most. All the… I got a few questions about it. All the other tracks, it’s tough to help unless you’re just really equal and battling it out,” Byron said in his post-race press conference at Glen.
“But superspeedways is a chance — everyone is really close there. Hopefully, we can push those guys when we need to. I intend on being aggressive there and just making sure all my belts are tight and make sure we’re ready to go,” he added.
Injuries cost Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott the season
The 2023 season so far hasn’t been kind to both of the HMS drivers. Both found themselves desperate after missing out on multiple races this season due to injuries they suffered while engaging in non-NASCAR activities.
Ahead of the third race of the 2023 season, Elliott injured his tibia after a snowboarding accident and missed out on six races. He also was suspended for a race by NASCAR, making the total number of races missed seven.
Bowman missed out on three-point paying races and the All-Star race after he broke his back following a sprint car racing accident. The No:48 driver was on a hot top-10 streak, and he lost big momentum.
