William Byron set to overcome his struggles with Next Gen car” in flat tracks in Pocono which has been historically successful
William Byron and Rudy Fugle
William Byron has been among the most consistent drivers of the 2022 season when compared to the rest of the grid but when compared to his teammate Byron hasn’t hit the mark since his second win of the season at Martinsville. In the last 14 races since the win, Byron has been able to finish inside the top only once which is shown in his championship standing as he is now P10, one place above his teammate Alex Bowman, where once he was standing at P2 to Chase Elliott.
The Pocono Raceway will host the 21st round of cup racing, the first of the final six races left in the 2022 regular season, M&M’s Fan Appreciation 400. Fans will be hoping to see fireworks in the three-cornered 2.5 miles flat track as the regular season championship battle between Elliott and Ross Chastain and the playoff race intensifies as there exists a higher possibility that a winless driver who is above the playoff cut-off in terms of points not making into the playoff.
William Byron historically has had good outings at the track same record he shares with his long-time crew chief Rudy Fugle, as he has truck series victory along with some close calls at the track. Now the No:24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver has come forth expressing his thoughts on how he expects his get back to winning ways in Pocono.
Find out what William Byron said
William Byron acknowledged that he is excited to race at Pocono as he and his crew chief Rudy Fugle has historically been successful in every level of their respective careers. He added that though there are some uncertainties for the Sunday race to address they have the advantage of a truck series race win and coming close to the win twice last year.
“I’m excited to get to Pocono (Raceway) this weekend. It’s a track that both myself and Rudy (Fugle, crew chief) have had success at in every level of our careers. We were close to getting the win there twice last year and we won there together in Trucks. I think there’s a little bit more of an unknown for Sunday’s race this time though,” William Byron said.
William Byron went on to say even though the track has four different corners the tracks are generally flat and it’s the type of track the No:24 team has struggled in the Next-Gen car. He pointed out that though they have shown good improvement in flat track racing last weekend at New Hampshire the right quality wasn’t up to the mark.
“Even though Pocono has three different corners, they are all primarily flat and flat tracks have been an area we have struggled with this year with the Next Gen car. I think last weekend at New Hampshire (Motor Speedway) we showed some improvement on those styles of tracks, but ride quality was still off throughout the run,” William Byron added.
William Byron went on to add that it has been hard to get the balance right in all three corners of Pocono in the past and he expects the same this weekend also. He added that his biggest focus will be his drive off turn three as it can really help the drivers to get their speed up in the straightway which can provide the best momentum for drivers going into turns 1 and 2.
“It has been hard to get the balance right for all three corners (at Pocono), and I feel like that may be an issue still this weekend. I still think my biggest focus, though, will be my drive off of turn three because it really carries you down the straightaway and sets you up with good momentum through turn one and on to turn two,” William Byron explained.
