William Byron wants to “rewrite history this weekend,” at Michigan by securing a “proud” win at the track

William Byron though already bagged two cups win this season, coming in Martinsville and Atlanta, has been struggling to keep up with the rest of the front runners since the second win. Finishing inside the top 10 now seems to be a big ask for Byron, while his teammate Chase Eliot is finishing consistently in the top 2 or top 5. Byron who was the most impressive driver at the start of the season now surely is the most struggling one.

Following his Martinsville win, William Byron has finished inside the top 10 only once, and once a regular-season championship contender is now not even in the top 10 at the point table. So, the four coming cup races will be vital for the No:24 Chevy Camaro ZL1 driver as he has to make a statement and put his team in the right mindset going into the playoff which he will be hoping to achieve on Sunday this weekend at Michigan.

William Byron acknowledged that Michigan has been a tricky track for him as it demands drivers to balance between drift in the straightaways and limiting the grip which he believes is kind of similar to Daytona.  He added that the track favors drivers with momentum during the races as pointed out his bad restart last year while running up front.

Michigan (International Speedway) is a tricky track. You have to manage drafting on the straightaways but also the feeling that you’re always on the limit of grip. It’s almost like Daytona (International Superspeedway) but with characteristics of a mile-and-a-half track. It’s basically a hybrid track. Timing passes is also a major factor as well as it’s a very momentum-heavy track. Last year, we were leading on the last restart, but I blocked the run coming from the high lane and lost momentum and that took us out of contention with how few laps were left,” William Byron said.

William Byron went on to say that he has been really close to winning in Michigan in the past so his main objective going into the race this weekend is to put an end to the winless run and create history. He added that it will be a matter of pride for both him and chevy to have a win at the track this year.

I’ve been really close to winning a few times at Michigan (International Speedway). I’m trying to rewrite history this weekend and hopefully be able to finally pull out the win with how close I’ve been before. This is also an important track for manufacturers, and I would take a lot of pride to be able to go out there and get the win for Chevrolet,” William Byron added.

Byron’s HMS teammate and championship leader Chase Elliott also shared his thoughts on the race and acknowledged that he wants to get the No:9 team over the setbacks they had last week just after the incredible top 2 runs they had and pointed out that they are focused on having an improved race product. He added that he needs to make sure that the team is doing everything right so that they peak at the right time.

You have to be at the top of your game heading into the playoffs. We can’t let setbacks like last week get to us. We have to keep focusing on what we can control and have good execution and just keep improving. I need to make sure I’m doing my job inside the car. Those are the things we’re focusing on to make sure we’re peaking at the right time,” says Chase Elliott.
