‘You’ve done enough,’ Jeff Burton A.K.A ‘The Mayor’ calls out Ross Chastain for his Gateway apology

The Inaugural Cup race at the World Wide Technology Raceway, St. Louis made headlines for all the right or wrong reasons depending on which side you are on. Deemed as one of the most interesting races this season made the headlines for the intense on-field fight that took place between Ross Chastain who drove aggressively on the track and Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott.

Though it is usual to see Ross Chastain going all out at the track the Gateway outing was more than the usual and was never over the limit. But on track for Denny Hamlin, it was too much as the veteran was ready to get back at him full on throughout the race. In his post-race interview, Hamlin came out and warned Chastain of potential reciprocation in the future for the aggression.

Ross Chastain on the other hand came out apologizing for his actions in a weird way as he went on to take the blame for every action that happened on the track and offered a serious apology saying “I owe half the field an apology. Words aren’t going to fix it so I’ll have to pay for it on the track. Almost did today and I deserve everything that they do. I can’t believe that I continue to make the same mistakes and overdrive the corners and drive into guys. I had time under caution to get reset and we go green and I drive into somebody. Terrible,”.

But not everyone was buying into the apology offered as they pointed out that Chastain shouldn’t have apologized for the hard racing or the apology he offered was too long for his own surrender. Among the prominent names who came to apologize was Dale Earnhardt Jr. who called out his apology saying “His words after the race were bulls***. He poured it on so thick. I don’t know, man. At one point, I almost thought he might be mocking us or something. He’s trolling us. It got so thick there. He was going on and on just repeating himself at times,”.

But now former NASCAR Cup Series driver nicknamed ‘The Mayor” Jeff Burton who now works as an NBC commentator has come forth expressing his distaste towards how Chastain apologized. He resonated with the words offered by Dale Earnhardt Jr. as he said it’s interesting to see how people handle different things and though he appreciates Chastain’s apology he acknowledged that he would like it to be short saying messed up, sorry, and will make it right in the future.

“It’s just interesting to see how people handle different things. Ross at World Wide Technology, I appreciate the apology, but enough is enough. Like, ‘Hey, I did it. It’s my fault. Hard racing. I’m sorry. I got to go make it right with those guys,” Jeff Burton said.

He went on to say that Chastain has gone too far with his apology as he finds him going beyond the line that people might not believe him. He went on to point out that he has seen multiple times where someone takes it so far that you are trying to sell things to seem genuine and suggested that Chastain has gone too far with it.

“But it’s enough. Like you’ve done enough. I think you go so far sometimes that people don’t believe you. You know what I mean. I’ve seen that happen multiple times where you take it so far that you’re trying to sell it. And people are like, ‘OK, that may not be genuine.’ Ross has to consider being real, being genuine, but not taking it so far,” Jeff Burton added.
