Greg Biffle‘s tragic passing away in a plane crash near North Carolina shook the entire NASCAR community to its core. Many people have still not moved on from the events and are keeping the late legend in their prayers. Amid the preparations for the 2026 season, the National Transportation Safety Board has revealed some shocking new details on the plane crash.
The NTSB has finally revealed the preliminary investigation report and confirmed that the crash took place at around 10:15 am ET. Greg Biffle, with his family and three other people, was on board the Cessna Citation 550, which crashed while attempting to land at the Statesville Regional Airport. The report revealed that the plane was wrecked on impact and engulfed in fire within seconds.
In a shocking turn of events, all seven people on board were declared dead on scene, with no one surviving the aftermath of the incident. Now, NTSB’s preliminary report has revealed how the crash actually happened. The flight departed as per schedule and had no issues while in the air. Nearing the landing time, the pilots talked about a potential inoperative thrust reverser indicator light and a perceived imbalance in engine power.
The pilots then attempted to land at the designated airport, lowering the flaps and the landing gear. Shockingly, the landing gear light did not illuminate while the plane continued to descend, ready for landing. The aircraft, carrying Greg Biffle and his family, struck the lighting structures, around 1380 feet short of the runway threshold. The wrecked plane dragged on for some distance before it finally came to a stop near the runway blast area, where it was completely engulfed in fire.
NTSB’s investigation has found that there was no evidence of structure or engine failure before the crash. Both engines were intact following the crash. The Safety Board has confirmed that this is just the preliminary report, and more investigation into the matter will reveal other information on the crash. For now, the entire community continues to honor Greg Biffle’s legacy and pursue humanitarian works on his behalf.

Kevin Harvick pays tribute to ‘competitor’ Greg Biffle
Even drivers who had lost to Greg Biffle and weren’t fond of him were saddened by the news of his passing. Among other iconic drivers, Kevin Harvick paid tribute to the late legend as well. Though Harvick wasn’t always on the best of terms with Biffle, the former always held a respectful stance about his competitor on track.

Recalling their racing days, Kevin Harvick paid tribute to his competitor, Greg Biffle. Harvick recalled that he had some intense rivalry with Biffle, but always had a good relationship with him. The 50-year-old pointed out that he drove for RCR and hence wasn’t exactly a ‘best friend’ to the Roush star back then. Regardless, he appreciated the late legend from a competitor standpoint and applauded how he achieved success from basically nothing prior to his racing career.
We had some intense rivalries along the way, but always had a good relationship with Greg that was very friendly. He drove for Roush, and I drove for RCR. So it was never like we were best friends. But, I think from a competitor standpoint, and just being able to appreciate who Greg was on the racetrack for what he did behind the wheel, and basically coming from nothing to make a career out of what he did and build a great life for him and his family.
