One of the major criticisms of the current NASCAR format is the win and you’re in system for the playoffs. This often overlook the drivers that has been super consistent throughout the year and give the slot to drivers that had a single breakout race the whole season. 2023 Cup champion Ryan Blaney isn’t a big fan of system.

On his latest appearance in the SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Ryan Blaney talked about the potential changes he would love to make to the championship format. One of those was rewarding consistency more without reducing the significance of winning races. He wants to give more emphasis to winning by awarding extra bonus points.

I don’t personally like the win and you’re in type thing. I think you got to be top X in points no matter what guys they take, whether it’s 12, 16, whatever, I think it’s just those guys in points. Think you can put a bunch of more emphasis on winning, as far as a ton more bonus points for winning.

Ryan Blaney said via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

The drivers get just five points as bonus for winning the race and that doesn’t affect the points tally as significantly as it should. He wants the sport to give big emphasis on winning races by awarding them 20 points or more. This will also help to make sure the race winner goes back home as the driver that earned the most points in the week.

You know, right now, I think it’s just five extra points for winning. Like, not even playoff points. Like, it’s just five extra. I think you can get, like, 20, put a big emphasis on winning, and the points gap is bigger there.

Ryan Blaney added.

With stage racing points in play, 20 points might not enough to create a gap. It would be interesting if the winner is awarded around 25-30 points, which would give them enough breathing space to make mistakes thorough out the season and not ruin their championship hopes. The Cup race winner deserves at least that advantage.

NASCAR insider highlights Ryan Blaney’s superstar swagger

One of the major issues NASCAR is facing while marketing the sport is the lack of a true superstar, who is viewed as a bads**, someone the casual fans look up to. According to insider and NBC NASCAR commentator Leigh Diffey, the only driver that has the personality as well as  Swagger to be the guy in the Cup garage is Ryan Balney.

I think you just try and highlight for the viewing audience, maybe dig a little bit deeper on the star’s personality, the driver’s personality, maybe away from the track. I think one guy who carries himself in a certain way and has that swagger in a superstar way is very much Ryan Blaney.

The veteran commentator further talking about the point, explained why he chose Blaney instead of the likes of Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson. The No:12 Ford Mustang drivers is the only one in the grid that consistently wins races and carries a personality on as well as off the track.

It’s what they do on the track. It’s what they do off the track. How many times have they won? Their personality, both on track and off track. It’s all of those contributing factors.

Leigh Diffey added.

The comments from the race analyst seems rational and Ryan Blaney is someone NASCAR can put more effort into marketing as a minimum result is assured. It would be interesting to see how the sport is going to use the opportunity they have on their hands with the veteran racer.
