Team Penske Racing’s Ryan Blaney was the ultimate heart breaker for six drivers and the saviour for Alex Bowman at Daytona International Speedway. He won the Coke Zero Sugar 400, in a four wide photo finish that featured three drivers that was in a must-win situation to secure a spot in the Cup Series playoffs.

The 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney found himself P13 in the grid, with just two more laps left in the race. He and his Ford teammates Cole Custer of Haas Factory Team, teamed up, charged up the field. They were able to make opening with the pace advantage they were able to generate with drafting run.

Once they found themselves at the front alongside Justin Haley and Daniel Suarez, Custer abandoned the ex-champion and tried to take the lead from the former. The No:12 Ford Mustang, who was pushing the Haas driver, used this opportunity to his advantage and used the opening to take the middle lane as well as the important race lead.

On his post-race interview, the Penske driver admitted that that the last two laps were absolutely wild and explained how he teamed up with the ex-Xfinity Series champion Custer to secure the race win. They planed the move ahead of the restart, as the veteran advised the youngster to take the top lane and with patience, they were able to pull it off.

What a wild last couple laps, honestly. I was with Cole, I kind of asked him on the restart if you got to the top, I’m going with you, and we just waited and waited and then the opportunity came. He made the move to get to the top and we were able to get really good shoves. Couple good guys behind us and it just kind of cleared the way for me.

Ryan Blaney said after the race.

The 15th career race victory from Blaney changed the whole playoffs dynamic. He earned extra post-season points that he earned, which will relax the pressure on him. It also helped Alex Bowman, who wrecked early in the race, to get into the playoff as the 16th ranked driver alongside Tyler Reddick at 15th on points.

Ryan Blaney admits his victory didn’t come in his usual way

The victory this weekend is pretty special from Ryan Blaney and can be classified as the best superspeedway win of the racers career. Talking about his approach the whole race, he explained how he raced differently in the first and second stage of the race, as they used more gas on stage one and later was on ultra saving mode on the second stage.

This is so cool. I think we kind of just took what was given to us. Kind of how we played Stage 1, had to take a lot of gas in Stage 2, and I wasn’t going to make any ground so I went into max fuel save mode to where I could go a little bit earlier than other guys.

Further talking about the point, he admitted that it wasn’t the traditional win he expected as he usually lead races on his way to winning races. Getting back to the victory lane yet again at venue also makes it a victory remember for him.

Definitely not a traditional way we like to run. We like to lead laps and couldn’t really get there until the end but got there when it mattered. It’s cool to win here again. I won here a few years ago, and nice to be back.

Ryan Blaney added.

The comments from the veteran racer shows he is over the moon after the win and has gained a lot of positive momentum going into the last 10 races of the 2025 season. It would be interesting to see how the rest of the events are going to playout for the No:12 team.
