‘The lapped cars kind of got in the way,’ Kevin Harvick after missing out on a win at Richmond in the ‘first clean day’ of racing in 2022

Stewart-Hass racing seems to be on its way back from the roller-coaster of a year they had last season as veteran Kevin Harvick, Arik Almirola youngster Chase Briscoe is getting them back to the pack of frontrunners. The comeback began last month at Phoenix buy Briscoe and now at Richmond, this weekend Kevin Harvick has done his part giving the team a well-deserved positive momentum going forward.
The 2014 Cup Series Champion secured his highest finish in the 2022 season, finishing the Richmond Raceway Toyota Owners 400 at P2 after fellow veteran Denny Hamlin. Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 Ford Mustang Crew chief Rodney Childers used a two-stop strategy in the last stage to ensure that his drivers will be on fresh tires for the final laps.
The strategy helped him to top William Byron and Martin Truex Jr. to get to the top 2 as both the drivers were not able to stop an advancing Kevin Harvick as they employed a one pit stop strategy which deprived them of fresh tires in the last laps.
But Kevin Harvick came up one spot short as he failed to make the intended charge at Denny Hamlin who also used a similar strategy and led the final 5 laps of the race. Now Harvick has come forth acknowledging how clean the race day was as no major incidents occurred and how some lapped cars delayed eventually denied him a chance for a late dance on Denny Hamlin.

Kevin Harvick acknowledged that it was the first clean day of racing of the 2022 season. He went on to say that if not for the lapped cars he would have had a go at leader Denny Hamlin in the final laps. The 2014 Cup Champion shared his optimism that he might be able to make this great day into a positive momentum.
“It was really the first clean day that we’ve had all year. The cars have been fast and [we] had a shot there at the end. I wanted to be close enough with the white (flag) to just take a swipe at him, but the lapped cars kind of got in the way and I lost a little bit of ground. Still, it’s a great day for us and hopefully a little bit of momentum in a positive direction,” Kevin Harvick said.
He went on to add that the team had a great strategy going into the last lap but came up short against eventual winner Denny Hamlin saying “We kept chipping away at it and they had the right strategy to win the race and [we] just wound up one short,”.
