‘The worst driver on the track,’ what cost Denny Hamlin a top 10 finish in Las Vegas?
Denny Hamlin
NASCAR Veteran and team owner, Denny Hamlin is sailing through uncharted territory in 2022 after he failed to finish two out of the last three Cup Series races earning him 30th place in the championship table. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was one of the underperforming drivers in the field on Sunday as he failed to finish the race following self-inflicted mechanical trouble.
During the final stage of the race Hamlin who had previously led 31 laps in the Las Vegas motor speedway in the two previous stages and coming off of pit road, Hamlin had a checklist of things to consider before getting’s things underway. But that’s where his 18 years of NASCAR experience came to bite him hard!
Why did Denny Hamlin fail to finish the race? and how he reacted to his costly mistake
The Next Generation cars have two different shifting patterns upshift and downshift but things went south after Denny Hamlin’s muscle memory failed him to do the right thing as he went for H-pattern gear shifting which was used in the past. An attempt to downshift to increase his speed prompted a miss-shift and the car spun out.
Denny Hamlin when realized he blew up the car’s drivetrain after being pushed to the pits by a tow truck didn’t hold out the frustration on himself saying “We broke the transaxle. Just killed every gear when I left pit road. We had the best car today, but just got back there and we were working our ways forward and made mistakes,”
Though frustrated with himself the veteran wasn’t ready to give in as he later tweeted that he is more motivated to run in Phoenix in the next round as he is motivated to overcome the loss which he believed he was the worst driver on the track ironically having the best car.
“The fastest car on the track today. The worst driver on the track today. Great improvements by everyone Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota Racing. Get me to Phx,” Denny Hamlin tweeted.
NASCAR will hit the Phoenix Raceway, Avondale for Ruoff Mortgage 500, the 4th race of the Cup series in 2022, on 14 March and Hamlin will be aiming to bounce back to the top.
