The NASCAR Cup garage was shocked when it was announced mid-way to the 2024 season that this season would be the last Stewart Haas Racing would compete in the sport. Team owners Gene Haas and Tony Stewart decided to end their partnership that yielded multiple Cup and Xfinity championships amidst increased financial baggage.
The team struggled to cope with the changes made to the car in the Next-Gen era and losing big primary sponsors after Kevin Harvick retired put them in tough situation. Though Gene Haas will continue racing with One Cup car and Two Xfinity cars, there would be a lot of crew members who are losing their jobs at the end of the season. Todd Gilliland sees an opportunity for his team here.
The Front Row Motorsports driver pointed out that his team should get the right people from the talented bunch that are exiting SHR for the 2024 season. This would enable the team that is already investing big time in the sport to be more consistent upfront while fighting for the race wins and be more than just a team too depended on Road Course and Super Speedway races.
You know, Jerry Frees and our management group at Front Row—we have to get the right people. There’s obviously a lot of good people out there right now with, you know, Stewart-Haas changing their whole thing, and it’s just about getting the right people in the right positions and obviously getting the right drivers. So, yeah, we’ll see, but I’m super excited about it.Todd Gilliland said via Door Bumper Clear podcast.
Todd Gilliland explains his struggles in the top tier
While further talking about the point, Gilliland asserted that it was really hard for them cope with racing in the top-tier with FRM. He admitted that he even though of going back to the lower divisions and win more races.
Do I need to go back and run the Xfinity Series or Truck Series again and win more races. It was definitely kind of a time to reflect or guess.Todd Gilliland said.
Despite all the doubts he produced some solid performance and with the departure of Michael McDowell from FRM, would be hopping to become the main guy for the team. 2025 will the year Gilliland can really establish himself.
