The 2024 NASCAR Cup season will mark an end of an era as championship winning team Stewart Haas Racing is set to cease their operation after the next-three races. They announced the decision at the start of the season, citing the financial struggles and lack of opportunity for sustainable development.

SHR co-owner Tony Stewart recently sat down with his ex-driver and close friend Kevin Harvick in the Happy Hour podcast. He addressed the social media abuse he got for the decision, the current direction of the sport owing to the FRM-23XI lawsuit and also explained the direction of the sport in the current state.

Tony Stewart also talked about his feelings about letting the 16 old chapter of his life left behind. He admitted that he finds the end of Stewart Haas Racing as a bitter sweet moment, though its much bitter than sweeter. The former Cup champion admitted that it was a tough situation for him.

Knowing that when I left the building there, here’s some of those people I’ve known for 16 years, and I may never, ever see them again, unfortunately. I don’t know that it’s even bittersweet. It’s more bitter than sweet. It’s a tough decision. But things in life change. Your priorities change, and variables outside of your control change as well.

While further talking about the point, Tony Stewart has pointed out that they now have more reasons to end SHR’s operations. He pointed out that the chaos the sport is now owing to fight between the team owners and NASCAR.

We had different reasons for why we had to shut down at the end of the season, but as time has gone on and watching the owners and NASCAR fight and just the chaos that’s going on over there, I’m fine being done with this at the end of the year.

It seems Tony Stewart has almost completed everything related to ceasing operations of the team and giving the keys to co-owner Gene Haas. It will be interesting to see how Stewart will approach his life after cutting most of his ties with the sport.
