NASCAR Playoffs are full of action. However sometimes the chaos can lead to tensions within a team. That is exactly what happened at New Hampshire last weekend when Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs made contact during the race. After the incident, Gibbs did not hold back his anger on social media.
During the New Hampshire race, Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs were fighting for position. Hamlin tried to make a move on the outside of his teammate’s No. 54 car. However, the two drivers ended up making contact, as Hamlin touched the back of Gibbs’ car. The No. 54 car spun sideways before hitting the wall, while the No. 11 car carried forward.
The incident was not ignored by critics. NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick questioned whether this incident would inevitably ruin Denny Hamlin’s championship run this season. Ty Gibbs seemingly appreciated Harvick’s comments. The No. 54 shared a snippet from the podcast on his Instagram story which had subtitles on. Gibbs even used a finger emoji indicating that he agreed with the comments.
Is that the moment that derails Denny Hamlin’s 2025 championship?

Kevin Harvick questions Denny Hamlin’s intent over Ty Gibbs crash
While Ty Gibbs only shared a snippet from the podcast, Kevin Harvick had a lot more to say on Denny Hamlin. Hamlin currently sits in fifth place in the Playoff standings, and is the second Toyota driver after fourth-placed Christopher Bell.

Kevin Harvick made it clear that the collision had to be intentional from Hamlin. He pointed out that the No. 11 could’ve even taken out Christopher Bell who was right behind the two. This could’ve been a disaster for JGR. Luckily, Bell remained unaffected. Moreover, Harvick admitted that he had not expected to see such a chaotic move from the former Cup Series champion at such a pivotal stage of the season.
That was intentional. There’s no hiding that that wasn’t intentional… You could have wiped out all three of them. That decision now is a decision that you have to talk about next week. It’s a decision that will divide the shop… As mature as Denny Hamlin has become and as much of a leader as he has become, I’m really surprised that he chose that action in that moment during the playoffs.
Kevin Harvick explained.
Certainly, team owner Joe Gibbs wouldn’t be happy to see his drivers causing damage to one another on-track, let alone during the Playoffs. Ty Gibbs is the grandson of the senior Gibbs, though it’s unlikely that this relationship would cause any favoritism. Joe Gibbs is a racing veteran who wants results. Thus, be it Denny Hamlin or Ty Gibbs, they’re both likely to have a tough conversation with their boss.
At the end of the day, Denny Hamlin is far more experienced than Ty Gibbs. The No. 11 should’ve known better than making such an aggressive maneuver on his teammate. Avoiding this move could’ve prevented tensions within the garage.
