‘We’ve all done dumb things,’ Joey Logano on Ty Gibbs’s Martinsville fistfight
Ty Gibbs and Joey Logano
The Martinsville Speedway witnessed more drama in the Xfinity series than the main event, the Cup race, with drivers engaging in a fistfight post-race following their OnTrack battle. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Ty Gibbs who has been making waves in the Xfinity events and young Sam Mayers went down on each after the latter pushed the former out of contention from a top spot in the race.
Fistfights or drivers going on a rampage with words happen in Motorsports as the high-intensity races in front of an electric crowd will always pump your adrenaline to the limit and emotions will take over, just like what happened in Martinsville.
Now, the 2012 Cup Series Champion No:22 Team Penske Racing driver, Joey Logano who has his own fair share of aggressive driving incidents from the past has come forth expressing his opinion on the matter at hand.
Find out what Joey Logano said
Joey Logano acknowledged that he doesn’t agree with what happened post-race in the Martinsville Xfinity series among the young drivers though he had similar experiences in the past. He added that he learned from such incidents in his past. He added that it was just a matter of taking a deep breath and thinking about the big picture before acting on it. Joey Logano also acknowledged that as a driver all of them had done dump things.
“Do I agree with the way it went down? No, I don’t. Have I done that type of thing before? Yeah, I have. Am I proud of it? No, not at all. But I learned from it at least… I guess taking a deep breath and understanding the big picture and handling things correctly is probably the way to go. But we’ve all done dumb things. It’s just as a driver, it’s just going to be out there in the open,” Joey Logano said.
Joey Logano went on to add that the ambition to win got both of them in the wrong direction off the track, not on the track, and added that the drivers should understand the fact that if you are pushing someone you should be ready to take it back.
“Two younger guys, ambitious to win and I wouldn’t say what happened on the race track was wrong, but I’d say what happened after was probably not the right direction…I don’t know if he had to go straight to fists right off the bat, but for what it was, if you’re going to race a certain way, you got to expect to be raced that way back. That’s the driver code that nobody can understand. That’s it. If you’re willing to push, then you’ve got to be willing to take some pushes,” says Joey Logano.
