National Sports Awards ceremony 2020 to be held virtually

The National Sports Awards which are conferred on athletes and coaches every year by the President of India for their contribution in respective sports. However, this year ceremony will take place virtually following the pandemic.

National Sports Awards ceremony will virtually take place on August 29, the awards include- The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the Arjuna Award, the Dronacharya award and the Dhyan Chand award.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, earlier had constituted a selection Committee for selecting awardees for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dronacharya Awards, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chand Awards, Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar Award and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for year 2020.

“The ceremony will take place virtually but what we have to see how the exact process would pan out. We will see that only names will be announced or players will appear on virtual screen. That is yet to be decided. Hopefully, everything will be decided in a couple of days,” a source within the Sports Ministry told ANI.

Recommended names for Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awards

On Monday, the Sports Ministry’s Selection Committee recommended 15 names for Dhyan Chand Award and 13 for Dronacharya. The Selection Committee will have a discussion on the Arjuna Award and Rajiv Gandhi khel Ratna Award on Tuesday (today)

A source with in the Sports Ministry told ANI, “Juse Felix, Romesh Pathania, Jaspal Rana and Kuldeep Handoo are among 13 names for Dronacharya Award this year.”

Justice Mukundakam Sharma, retired Justice of Supreme Court was selected as chairperson for the committee.
