Celtics bring back Daniel Theis while sending away Dennis Schroder to Rockets

Dennis Schroder against Chicago Bulls
Entering the trade deadline, there were rumors of Boston Celtics’ Dennis Schroder being sent away even after trying his best to cope alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. As things stand, Schroder has found himself a new home in Houston, which has also allowed Boston to bring back Daniel Theis. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Enes Kanter Freedom and Bruno Fernandes will also be received by the Rockets.
With Celtics currently ahead of the Brooklyn Nets in the Eastern Conference Standings, and by the looks of it, they want the right pieces around their marquee duo to fetch a berth in the playoffs as well. Moreover, with the Rockets being one of the worst teams in the current season, it seems like they would require a re-built sooner rather than later.

Dennis Schroder waived off by Boston Celtics

With Daniel Theis being one of the most consistent scorers for the Houston Rockets so far, whenever he has been on the floor, it seems like Boston Celtics have made the most of this trade. But was sacrificing Dennis Schroder justified? Remains to be seen.
Boston needed to upgrade at center behind the Al Horford-Robert Williams front-court pairing. Until now, their most reliable solution was short-shifting Horford, but doing so resulted in heavy minutes for a player in his 15th season. Theis spent the first 3.5 years of his NBA career with the Celtics. At the trade deadline last season, Boston moved him in a cost-cutting deal after acquiring Evan Fournier earlier in the day.

Theis is averaging 8.4 points and five rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game this season, starting in 21 of the 26 games he’s played. He’s taking 6.9 shots per contest and converting 46.9 percent of them, including 61 percent of his 3.8 two-point field goals.
That being said, as the 2021-22 season continues, it will be interesting to see how Boston Celtics use their old friend Theis. On the other hand, where will fate eventually lead Schroder?
