The league officials have been known to show partiality toward their athlete employees. Be it during All-Star selections or while conducting trades, sometimes players are left on the receiving of the hardships. In a recent episode of The Old Man and The Three podcast hosted by JJ Reddick, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum revealed why the NBA is unfair to their players with instances dated back to last year’s playoffs series.

During the interview, the Celtics player brought out some information about the flawed voting system that cost him a cut of his bonus. He said, “There is no criteria set for the voters on who they should vote for. It’s all opinion-based. It’s like, ‘Well, you know, I like this guy a little bit more.’”

Tatum had explained a scenario where he was promised a hefty amount only if he had an All-NBA selection. “I remember last year when I was in the playoffs or the playoffs might have been over and everybody was coming out with their All-NBA ballots and who they were voting for. I had $30 million on the line to make it. I specifically remember one person saying, ‘I’m not a fan of his shot selection, so I just couldn’t put him on my All-NBA ballot.’  And I was baffled.”

It almost seems unfair to Jayson Tatum for being denied his cut by a single person’s opinion whereas his numbers actually proved his value is worth much more than just a simple shot selection opinion. We have seen many players being selected despite averaging much lower than the Celtics’ player. He touched upon players like Chris Paul who average below 20 points and are on a top-three seed team that gets much more recognition than a player averaging 25+ points, 5+ assists, and rebounds on a middle-ranked team.

It is more than just unfair after putting up MVP caliber numbers, being promised a bonus with high hopes of getting it, and being shut down just because one person does not like a particular play you seem to have a tendency towards. Tatum has been the top option on the Celtics roster ever since he was drafted into the league.

One of the most recent instances of unfair selection would be the 75th-anniversary team list. The media is filled with opinions and not every opinion is fair to everyone. There are a number of solutions that could help solve this problem such as letting players vote or setting statistical barriers to limit the voters of their personal opinions. After a major reveal like this, the league is bound to receive a lot of backlashes and the situation should be addressed as soon as possible.
