Phoenix Mercury star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner is working on a memoir detailing her “unfathomable” experience of being arrested and jailed in Russia. The unnamed memoir is set to be released in the spring of 2024.
Griner was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in February 2022 after Russian authorities found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She was charged with smuggling significant amounts of narcotic substances, a crime carrying a potential punishment of five to 10 years in prison. She was released as part of a prisoner exchange between the US and Russian Authorities for convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout.
In her memoir, Griner will reveal the details of her arrest, her conditions in jail, and her struggle to maintain hope and dignity. She will also share her personal story of growing up as a Black lesbian athlete in America, overcoming bullying and discrimination, and achieving success and fame on the basketball court.
“I hope that my story can shed some light on what is happening in Russia and other countries where people are suffering from oppression and violence,” she said in a statement released by her publisher. “I also hope that my story can inspire others to never give up on their dreams and their freedom.”
“I never meant to break any laws here. I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn’t end my life here,” Griner said in an emotional speech before a Moscow court in August 2022, according to CNN. “I want to say again that I had no intent on breaking any Russian laws. I had no intent. I did not conspire or plan to commit this crime.”

Griner’s memoir will be accompanied by a documentary film that will chronicle her ordeal and feature interviews with her family, friends, teammates, coaches, lawyers, and human rights activists. The film is being produced by ESPN Films and will air on ESPN+ in 2024.
But not everyone is excited about Griner’s memoir and documentary. Some NBA fans have expressed disdain and disbelief for Griner’s situation on social media, accusing her of lying, exaggerating, or deserving her fate.
Griner has not responded to the online criticism but has expressed her gratitude for the support from her fans, colleagues, and organizations. She has also urged people to pay attention to human rights and social justice issues.
