If one doesn’t think that this NBA trade market has been wild enough already, then after coming across the most recent Chicago Bulls head coach news, he or she would surely agree to it. As per ESPN reporter Sam Charania, the Bulls have extended their current head coach, Billy Donovan‘s contract, signing him to a multi-year deal.
This comes as a surprise to many, including the Bulls fans as well, because last season they finished 9th in the Eastern Conference. Despite that, Donovan was able to secure a contract extension, leaving many upset in the process. The details of the 60-year-old’s contract are still not revealed. Last season, Donovan led Chicago to ninth place in the Eastern Conference and its second straight 39-43 record.

The Bulls missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season after losing to the Miami Heat 109-90 in a play-in game. After back-to-back poor seasons, many anticipated that there was a need for a change, starting right from the top. Rather, the Bulls chose to extend Donovan’s contract, which did not sit well with many.

In Donovan’s defense, he did not have his star man, Lonzo Ball, for major portions of his tenure since being appointed the Bulls’ HC. This season, Josh Giddey, who was acquired from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Alex Caruso, showed promising signs. The Bulls also welcomed back Ball after missing two and a half seasons.
That said, the Bulls still endured a difficult season. Despite this, management has put its faith in Donovan to get the storied franchise back on track. Donovan’s record in his five seasons with Chicago is 195-205. It remains to be seen if the changes to this stat line are going forward with his side in the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season.
Fans left disappointed after coming across the Billy Donovan contract extension news
The Chicago Bulls were once regarded as one of the best NBA teams to exist. However, much has changed over the past decade. Now they are just a mere shadow of themselves. The side has not made the NBA playoffs for years under Billy Donovan’s leadership. Most recently, the Donovan contract extension news has not gone down well with the Bulls’ fanbase, mostly because his tenure with the side has been nothing short of a failure.
Many of the NBA fans in general took to various social media apps and sites to put forward their views, trolls, and a feeling of disappointment on X. One fan wrote on X, My thoughts and prayers for bulls fans. Check out some of the fan reactions below:

Donovan had one of the most impressive college basketball resumes long before he joined the NBA. He guided the Gators to Final Fours in 2000 and 2014 and back-to-back NCAA titles in 2006 and 2007 while serving as head coach of Florida from 1996 to 2015. Despite all this, his stints in the NBA have not been that great, casting doubt amongst the fans.
The Bulls-Josh Giddey contract extension talks continue to drag on
The Chicago Bulls traded Josh Giddey in exchange for Alex Caruso, sending him to the Oklahoma City Thunder last season. This was one of the best moves in recent years the Bulls pulled off because Giddey proved to be a promising player for the Bulls this past 2024-25 NBA season. Giddey produced 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game during the 2024–25 campaign.
Given that he picked up the pace in the second half of the season, it was a promising one. However, the situation with the Bulls regarding his contract extension has seemed to drag on a lot. This is mostly because Giddey wants a long-term contract instead of a short one, which the Bulls are hesitating to offer.

This has led to a halt in contract negotiations, leading to Giddey opening his options to other NBA teams as well. However, it still seems likely that the Bulls will tie down Giddey on an extension deal, but his demands are seriously hurting the Bulls. Giddey wants a similar deal to Jalen Suggs, which means he wants around $30 million a year, which the Bulls don’t want to spend.
