Dwayne Wade is one of the greatest ever to play in the NBA. He is a 3x NBA Champion, 13x NBA All-Star, 8x All-NBA, 3x NBA All-Defense, and part of the NBA 75th Anniversary team. He came into the league in 2003 as the 5th overall pick, selected by the Miami Heat. He led his team to a championship in just the 3rd season of his career, in 2006.
Recently, Dwayne Wade’s daughter aya posted a pic on Instagram to honor the late great Kobe Bryant, wearing her ‘Number 8’ jersey. She captioned it – “always remembering and honoring Kobe and Gianna”.
For those who don’t know, Zaya Wade was born a trans girl to Dwayne Wade and his first wife Siohvaughn Funches. Zaya, born in 2007, came out in 2020, and now uses she/her as pronouns. Wade has been extremely supportive of his daughter and the LGBTQ+ community, of which Zaya is a prominent figure too. She has already garnered a following of 490,000+ on Instagram.
Kwame Brown’s controversial comments
For some reason, Zaya’s post irked Wade’s former 1st overall Draft Pick Kwame Brown. Kwame said on his YouTube show – “I’m not saying there’s anything against homosexuals, but [Kobe] is a heterosexual man. Why is he being honored by making his jersey into a dress? Wear his goddamn jersey for the day to honor him without the dress part”
Brown found Zaya’s post to be disrespectful as he felt that Kobe’s name was used to promote something that Kobe was not. Although it is a personal opinion of Kwame Brown, it was not fair in the least. Brown did not stop and further added – “Let’s please not show our Black brother in this light. This is no offense to nobody else. This man was a heterosexual man with a wife and a family. There’s no reason for this to be tied to Kobe Bryant. None whatsoever.”
Dwayne Wade’s lovely 2-word reaction to her daughter’s post
Dwayne Wade, however, continues to be supportive of her daughter and will always be. He commented on Zaya’s Instagram post with great pride – ‘girl dad’. Wade once said on Ellen’s show about Zaya – “We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we’re proud allies as well. And we take our roles and our responsibilities as parents very seriously”. He also promised to support her forever to be ‘her best self’.
During his time in the NBA, Dwayne Wade and his family got very close and attached to Kobe Bryant, playing with him for the Team USA in the Olympics. Wade has always spoken about how much he respects Kobe Bryant and what he means to him and his family. Wade’s respect is evident as he once said about Kobe – “I grew so much [in] confidence from him, as an opponent, because he pushed me to levels that I didn’t know that I could go to. I only wanted to go there because I wanted to prove him wrong — or I wanted to prove myself right.”
