Pelicans’ Jose Alvarado was on fire against the San Antonio Spurs, as he scored his career-best of 23 points coming off the bench on Saturday night. The undrafted rookie led the New Orleans Pelicans in the game, he played a critical role to bring the team on track when they were struggling in the second half. Even though Alvarado was giving his best effort to get the victory it seems that fate was not on his side.

The Spurs were on the court to get revenge for their last loss against the Pelicans. Despite getting a good start the Pelicans were not able to sustain their lead as the Spurs came up with a new strategy of defense, offensive rebounding which seemed impossible for Pelicans to crack. But the New Orleans didn’t let the game go easily into the hands of Spurs as their hustle play made the game back and forth for both the team.

When Jose Alvarado came off the bench the Pelicans started to gain pace, which helped them to tie the game at 84-84 after three quarters. The game was looking intense and it was clear that the game will move to the final minutes for its result and the same thing happened. When only 3 minutes remained, Alvarado took the control of the ball in the game.

The undersized guard shot a mid-range floater when 2:28 minutes were remaining, with this the Spurs lead was cut to six. After that, during the 1:45 minute, Alvarado gave a slick pass to rookie Trey Murphy who made a deep three-pointer from the corner. Which then decreased the lead to just three points. But after this point, a foul decision by officials on Alvarado turned the game in the Spurs’ favor.

What happened was, when Murphy scored the point, the ball came outside the rim and Alvarado grab the ball and passed it to the refs, but refs called it a delay of the game and gave a technical foul to the Pelicans guard because you can’t touch the ball once it goes through the nets. Due to this, the Spurs got a free throw through which they regained the momentum in the game.

Jose Alvarado miss the clutch shot to get the win over Spurs

Although the game was looking in the favor of the Spurs in the last few seconds, the Pelicans still tried their best and Alvarado again got a chance to win the game in the final second when they were two points down but he missed the shot from behind the three-point arc. The Spurs rebounded the ball and scored after which the game ended with the Pelicans 107-103 loss.

Here’s what Jose Alvarado said in the postgame interview about his miss in the final moment of the game. “I’ll take the shot again,” Alvarado said. “I’ll make it next time. I’m thankful my team believed in me to give me the ball at that time. I’ll have to watch it again. I could have drove and passed it out. But I don’t know. I took it, and I’ll take it again if I have to.”
