The most peculiar part about this entire incident we need to focus on is the fact that Dennis Rodman has been close friends with North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong UN since a really long time, and has officially visited the country 4 times, as he was personally invited by the man Kim Jong Un himself.

Back when Kim Jong Un came in power a few years before 2013, Kenneth Bae was detained in North Korea, and the eyes of the all the people in the USA were on Rodman, who was “close friends” with the dictator, and it was expected of him to help Bae out to some extent in order to get him out of jail.

Dennis Rodman was supposedly unaware of the fact that politics and sports don’t go together, or forget the fact sports, politics and anything else don’t ever go together, and the politics between two countries which are rivals of each other is the worst combination which you could ever make, and Rodman decided to do just that.

When Un came in power, he had to take stringent actions in order to prove that he was worthy of being in control of North Korea and whoever came in between his goals or tried to spread any propaganda would be severely punished, which is exactly when Kenneth Bae was sentenced to prison for 15 years for allegedly spreading propaganda against Kim. The act wasn’t an act of treachery and therefore, Bae was sentenced to 15 years in prison instead of detention.

In times like these when the Supreme Leader was pissed off at an American, only one person could calm him down, his close friend Dennis Rodman. But the fact remains that Rodman did the exact opposite.

Rodman began his process by organising a basketball match between North Korea and USA, after which he went on camera to say that Bae was a criminal and deserved to go through all that was being done to him, and specifically deserved the punishment. Bae’s family was heartbroken to hear such words from their last hope, and didn’t believe what they had heard from him.

Immediately after this incident, Rodman’s PR Team came out in order to give an apology for all the things said by him, saying that it was the result of drinking and stress, which still remains a matter of discussion.

Kenneth Bae’s release from North Korea and freedom from Kim Jong Un

Dennis Rodman did condemn Bae’s actions and called him a full-fledged criminal for speaking up against the Supreme Leader but also went on to take the credits for his release from North Korea. Bae’s release coincided with the release of the movie, “The Interview”. Bae was released 735 days after his detention, post which he has set up an NGO to speak up against the actions of the Dictator and is doing well in order to achieve his goal.

No matter what happens, this incident at least taught that he doesn’t need to involve himself in the politics between two rival countries and should definitely not mix sports and politics
