Klay Thompson’s return date confirmed as the Warriors look to strengthen their championship contention

Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson is as near to an NBA return as he has ever been. The last time he was this near to his return was the off-season before the start of the 2020-21 NBA season. That return couldn’t come to fruition as he tore his Achillies Tendon in November 2020.

Klay is one of the most beloved players in the league. A lot of hearts were broken when he was injured in Game-6 of the NBA finals 2019 on June 13th. The MRI scan that came out the next day confirmed the dreaded assumption, an ACL tear. Thompson was set to be sidelined for the next six to nine months.

Later that year in October, during the 2019-2020 NBA season, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed that Klay would remain out for the entire season, but he is making good progress. The Warriors had one of their worst seasons that year, being without Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in addition to Klay Thompson. They were not called to the Orlando Bubble for the season restart as they had no chance of playoff contention.

Klay was set to return next season in 2020-21, but just days before the season started, he injured himself once again. This time it was Achilles Tendon rupture as was confirmed by the Warriors on November 25th, 2020. This was an even severe injury that forced Klay to miss the entire last season and almost half of this season too.

But the good news is that Klay Thompson will expectedly make his season debut on Sunday, against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Warriors’ own Chase Center. By this Sunday, it will have been 941 days since Klay stepped on a basketball court for an NBA game. But the sentiments in fans and the Warriors alike, are high right now.

Klay has had it hard over the past few years being only able to watch the game that he dearly loves. He has been seen breaking down twice this season. After a game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Klay was seen contemplating his life on the Warriors’ bench long after the game was finished. He faced a similar breakdown a few days later after a game against the Denver Nuggets.
