Klay Thompson made his long-awaited comeback to the NBA to wild fanfare on Sunday night in San Francisco. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-82 as the Warriors regain the top seed by improving their record to 30-9.
Klay scored 17 points in 20 minutes of action. He didn’t have a bad game for someone who hasn’t played for 941 days. Klay went 7-18 from the field and 3-8 from downtown. He scored the first points for the Warriors in the game when he got an open lane and he drove to the rim for a layup. Klay quoted after the game – “I was so excited I saw a lane to the basket that I just took the opportunity.“

The Warriors have been a special team in the NBA for many years and it all started with a core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala. Having Klay back after two and a half years meant a lot to the team. This was evident from the fact that Draymond Green who was unavailable to play due to a calf tightness decided to start the game to be able to share the moment with Klay. Green immediately took a foul after the tip-off and then went out for the entire game.
Stephen Curry returned to his shooting rhythm, as he scored 28 points and went 4-11 from threes. Jordan Poole contributed with 14 points and Andrew Wiggins had 10 points for the night. The Warriors put on another defensive show tonight, allowing the Cavs to score only 82 points, the 2nd lowest of the season. The Warriors’ defensive rating was 89.3 in the game.

NBA reacts to Klay Thompson’s return
Klay Thompson was excited and grateful to be back on the floor. After the game, he said – “After that, I thought it was going to be one of those nights where I might be unconscious. I did not shoot as well as I wanted to but I’m so happy I can even look at the stat sheet and see my name there. It’s been a long run. I’m not going to say it equivalent to winning a championship but it was pretty close.”
