Lakers News: Analyst Nick Wright believes Lakers will not win the title this season
The Los Angeles Lakers created a lot of hype during the off season by acquiring a few big time players and adding them to their roster. But to what extent were those signings even effective leaves a major question mark.
The NBA world has started to really question the team’s chances of winning the title or reaching the finals at the least after witnessing a seemingly lackluster season by the big 3 in Russell Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Obviously taking a look at those three names on the same roster sounds powerful but in real life, it is a whole different game.
Nick Wright gives honest truth on Lakers
NBA analyst Nick Wright said a few things on the Frist Things First show, that may have validity towards the Lakers system at the moment. “The Lakers made three big bets this offseason. The first bet was that Russell Westbrook will be able to transition into a third option on a great team, something he’s never been before.” Wright said.
Westbrook has definitely not fit in the role as anticipated especially as he failed to step up in the absence of LeBron James and even Anthony Davis. The reason as to why the player is not able to produce is unknown but his lack of production reverts back in the form of losses and it is not a good thing for his team (or teammates).
He averages 19.5 points with 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 rebounds per game this season. Although these numbers may seem good enough his value on the court has reduced ever since being brought down from being the top option.
Will Anthony Davis be as good as his peers?
Wright had also brought up the situation around Lakers forward Anthony Davis who is seated out due to injuries. In comparison to MVP Nikola Jokic and Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, Wright claims that Davis is not at the same level as them considering that the player has a lot of trouble dealing with injuries often.
He further spoke on LeBron James who has been at the top of his game every time he steps onto the court. Since his return from covid-19 protocols and an injury, the veteran has been playing better than ever averaging 26.4 points with 6.6 rebounds and 6.6 assist with 1.7 steals per game shooting 51% from the field and 34.0% from deep. The Lakers always play better while the player is present but as Wright had said, all three bets have to be yeses in order for the Lakers to compete for the title.
They are currently 7th in the Western Conference with an evened out record of 16 wins and 16 losses. Will they be able redeem themselves as the season progresses or will it be another disappointment? We are almost nearing the halfway mark of the season and the Lakers need to achieve a system for them to reach the top.
