“Last night they got gutted” Vince Carter addresses how Kyrie Irving’s full-time services could solve the concerns of the Brooklyn Nets approaching post-season
Brooklyn Nets
Recently, the Brooklyn Nets are now in the clear for Kyrie Irving as mayor of New York City stated that the vaccine mandate will no longer be in effect for athletes. Mayor Eric Adams has been closely working with his consultants to make relaxations to their restrictions imposed for private sector operations. He announced that the state plans on lifting the mandate for sports teams ahead of the MLB opening night.
This would be extremely great news for the Nets’ post-season plans as their point guard Kyrie Irving had missed half of the season due to the mandate and was only allowed to take part in road games. Irving is expected to take part in all games following to lifting of the mandate which could help the Nets in the post-season. Adams said, “I’m going to make tough choices. People are not going to agree with some of them. I must move the city forward.

The last few months have been tough for the Nets had to adjust to player availability not only because of Irving but also dealing with multiple injuries. LaMarcus Aldridge has been out due to a hip injury and will most likely return the following week. Seth Curry, who has had a great effect on the team’s offense while creating space for the top options and while leading the offense is now out on an ankle sprain. Joe Harris (ankle surgery) and Ben Simmons (back) will not make an appearance moving on into the season.
Despite having the mandate lifted allowing Irving to participate in all games, there are still holes that most of these players fill that would have otherwise boosted the Nets’ chances of making a deep playoff run. Brain Windhorst weighed in on the situation saying, “This means the Nets have gone from a potential spoiler to a potential contender. Having Kyrie Irving in the lineup this year makes as big of a difference as you could imagine.”

According to Windhorst, the Nets are the top three teams in the NBA when Irving is playing and they rank as the number one offensive team on the road when the point guard is present. “This is a complete game-changer to the Eastern Conference playoffs. Now I’m not going to sit here and tell you think they are the favorites. They have been the betting favorite for months. They still have one of the bottom six defenses in the league.”
Vince Carter further commented on the lack of defense saying, The huge question is defensively where will they be? We saw last night they got gutted. They were just giving up easy baskets, the defensive rotational mistakes are huge. Offensively I think they’ll be okay but another concern is staying healthy.” In terms of defense, Ben Simmons was brought in with the intention of giving the Nets a defensive boost. Simmons who is now out for the remainder of the season had a defensive rating of 106.1 tied for fourth overall in the league. He finished second place for the DPOY award behind Rudy Gobert with 15-first place votes.
