Luka Doncic Injury: Why did the Slovenian All-Star Point Guard leave the game against Pelicans early
Just a few days after making a full recovery from a right ankle injury, Luka Doncic was ruled out on Thursday night due to a right heel contusion.
Luka Doncic scored 53 points in a hard-fought victory against the Detroit Pistons after returning from an ankle injury. He was on his way to a similar performance against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, but a bizarre accident derailed him.
The incident occurred in the third quarter with Dallas Mavericks leading New Orleans by a huge margin of 81-55. To get a clear path, Doncic used a screen from Dwight Powell. However, when he went up for the dunk, he collided with Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas. He appeared to be in a lot of pain as he collapsed to the ground.
Doncic attempted to play through the injury at first but eventually asked coach Jason Kidd to take him out. After leaving the court, the Mavericks declared him injured with a right heel contusion, leading to a 111-106 victory. “We’ll see how he feels (Friday) and have a better update to give you,” Kidd told reporters after the game.
Despite Luka Doncic’s injury, the Mavericks defeat the Pelicans
On Thursday night, Luka Doncic scored 31 points before suffering an injury midway through the third quarter, but the Dallas Mavericks went on to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans 111-106, handing them their tenth straight defeat.
Despite only shooting 4-19 from the floor, Spencer Dinwiddie was the Mavs’ second-highest scorer with 21 points. Josh Green played 30 minutes off the bench and finished with 15 points. He had four rebounds, two steals, and a 7-10 field goal percentage.
To guide the Pelicans, who dropped below.500 for the first time this season, Brandon Ingram scored 26, CJ McCollum added 19, Jonas Valanciunas had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Naji Marshall scored 11, and Larry Nance Jr. had 10 points and 12 boards.
The Mavs, who are now in fourth place in the Western Conference rankings, increased to 28-25 and drew even with the Los Angeles Clippers for the fourth spot, now being separated by just a half-game. The Pelicans lost for the tenth time in a row, dropping to 26-27.
The Mavs’ next game is a challenging start to the five-game road trip against the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco. As a result of a 116-113 victory over Golden State at the American Airlines Center on November 29, Dallas presently has the season lead.
