Smart and Robert Williams III are the ones regaining defensive identity for Boston, which is just beginning. But the progress they have made in that direction would be hampered if Smart went out for a while. In addition to 11.2 points per game, Smart averages 3.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 1.3 steals. After the game, Smart told Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe that he didn’t think the knee injury was serious. On Sunday, the 28-year-old guard will have an MRI to further understand the ailment.

Unfortunately if Smart has any kind of serious injury, it would be a big setback for the Celtics. He is the reason for most of Boston’s defensive stops and continues to impress with his defensive prowess on a daily basis. He is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and one of the most consistent three-point shooters for the Celtics. Malcolm Brogdon who has become one of the best bench players for the Celtics after being traded can start the games in Smart’s absence. If only the former DPOY is sidelined.

Marcus Smart is one of the best perimeter defenders and Williams is one of the top rim protectors in the league. Smart’s absence would definitely affect their perimeter defense and that is one of the biggest reasons for the Celtics’ top position in the league right now.

In 21 minutes of action, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year finished with five points, two rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Although the extent of Marcus Smart’s injury is still unknown, the Celtics are undoubtedly hopeful that it is not significant and won’t be a long-term problem. Although the seriousness of the injury is still unknown, if he is out for some significant time, the Beantown supporters know, it is a big blow to their dominance.
