WATCH: Robert Williams’ MONSTROUS dunk causes 38-plus-minute delay in Celtics-Nuggets matchup

Robert Williams delayed the Boston Celtics game against the Denver Nuggets for over 35 minutes. What appeared in the video later, was that the rim was damaged after Williams dunked the ball and hung there for a few seconds. The game was delayed for almost 40 minutes after the Nuggets’ Ball Arena supervisors came to fix the rim.

In the 4th quarter, with over 6 minutes left in the game, Jaylen Brown threw the alley-oop from only a few feet ahead of half court. Williams caught the ball mid-air and dunked it hard. However, after Robert dunked it, he hung on the ring in excitement, before landing on his feet. Perhaps, the Celtics star didn’t realize what had happened to the rim. But the officials quickly realized what had happened and stopped the game.

The damage to the rim was a bit difficult to fix, as previously seen, rim problems aren’t easy to fix. This is not the first time that the rim has been damaged. Many a time we have seen players asking officials to fix the angle of the rim. Perhaps, all the NBA fans remember glass destroyer and rim-bender Shaquille O’Neal. His destructions to the rim are still scary and legendary.

During the 38-minute delay players from the Nuggets’ end were playing rock-paper-scissors with a young fan. While Marcus Smart just sat on the floor near the free throw line the whole time. Grant Williams also entertained the Celtics’ bench and courtside crowd with some of his moves. Jayson Tatum made some business decisions and went on to rest on the bench. The sideline reporter during the delay also interviewed former player and champion Timofey Mozgov.

Timofey discussing the broken rim said: “It’s like cooking a breakfast.” But the rim was still broken and there were many minutes left for it to be fixed, during those even Danilo Gallinari got interviewed for his ACL recovery.

Can Robert Williams land Boston Celtics a clear chance to win the NBA title?

Robert Williams

Before he was injured, Robert Williams was the defensive monster for Boston and he could defend the rim like the best defenders in the league. The Celtics have already been a good defensive team, perhaps not like last year but they still perform well on the defensive end. Their overall team defensive intensity and prowess were unmatchable last year, under Ime Udoka‘s system. A huge credit of their last year’s defensive identity goes to Williams. Last year, he averaged 2.2 blocks per game for Boston.

Boston already has a good perimeter defense, in Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum. Williams’ return would give them a true rim protector at the rim and reduce the opponents’ points in the paint area. Williams can give a tough matchup to the opponents’ big man on both ends of the floor. His return could finally give Celtics their answer to the Giannis Antetokounmpo and Zion Williamson problem the league is facing right now.

The Nuggets defeated the Celtics 123-111 behind a 30-point, 12 rebounds, 12 assist triple-double from Nikola Jokic. It was Nuggets’ 10th win in their last 12 games. The Nuggets (24-12) and the Celtics (26-11), both are the top teams in their respective Conferences. Williams scored 8 points and had 6 rebounds in 19 minutes on the floor. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics’ scoring with 30 points. Jayson Tatum also scored 25 points with 6 assists and 7 rebounds. The Celtics already have a good chance to make it to the Finals. And, if Williams stays healthy and steps up on both the ends not many teams in the league will be able to stop them in a seven-game series.
