It has been five months that Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner was held captive in Russia for carrying hash cartridges at the Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport. While her wife and majority of basketball fanatics feel that US government would have taken different measures if it was LeBron James or Stephen Curry-like superstars in her place, former Los Angeles Lakers, Robert Horry decided to contemplate on the same.
The former Laker was on the “Big Shot Bob Pod” alongside Rob Jenners and Brandon Harper wherein he revealed his desire to see Brittney Griner reach back home safely to her friends and family as early as possible. Horry even exclaimed that it was the WNBA star’s doings that saw her land in Russian prison, as weed wasn’t allowed anywhere in the world except Canada, something to which the hosts laughed. Rob Jenners said that there is no way the US Government can ‘withdraw’ anyone from a foreign judicial system in such matters.

After which the discussion quickly changed upon whether or not the State Department would have taken different measures if it was LeBron or Curry in Brittney Griner’s place. To which Horry said, “I don’ think it would be any different. Everybody wants to say he has a bigger name. He is a male, you know. I don’t think so because Russia would say we got this guy for illegal weed.
Robert emphasised about this being a time of war, with rumors of Putin’s health declining. Hence, it can be a dangerous time for any athlete.
“We really gonna hide him. It’s hard to say that. You know we could throw a bunch of s**t to the wall and hope it sticks. But at the end of the day, Russia gonna what the f**k they wanna do. Especially at the time when they are at war, and at a time when people are talking about Putin’s health is not good.”
That being said, Brittney Griner’s lawyers argued that the cartridges found were for medical reasons, but the court in Russia has extended her detainment. It is given that the Mercury star would be required to stay for a longer time in the foreign land, but her friends and family would be hoping Joe Biden’s administration to make a prisoner swap as early as they could.
