“We don’t like to see players requesting trades” Adam Silver delivers strong remarks on Kevin Durant amid trade fiasco
The situation around Kevin Durant has been very stagnant ever since he requested (or demanded) a trade from the Brooklyn Nets organization. It is very hard to blame him for making an abrupt decision barely a year after signing a massive $194 million contract extension. This contract will be valid through the 2025-26 season but KD will not earn as a Net.
Joe Tsai, owner of the Brooklyn team has been working to find a suitable trade option but so far he has not been lucky. Of course, it would not make sense for him to settle for less just to release Durant as he has invested a lot of money in that player and would expect to receive some sort of a return amount. The Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, and Toronto Raptors have shown interest but neither team has the assets.
Kyrie Irving to be blamed for Brooklyn Nets super team failure
A majority of the blame would have to be directed to Kyrie Irving who barely lived up to his promise to the team last season. He only appeared for 29 games and played very inconsistently during the playoffs. This caused a lot chaos between the players and franchise resulting in the departure of James Harden. The team happened to be the favorites to win the title as well.
Irving signed a one-year extension with the Nets worth $36.5 million over the upcoming season. And this signing possibly was not what Kevin Durant wanted. Shortly after his teammate accepted the deal he called quits. It would not be wrong of KD wanting to get himself outside of an unreliable situation where he had to risk having to carry the weight of his team alone.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver break silence over Kevin Durant demanding trades
The whole Kevin Durant fiasco has gotten the league in a very confused state. With no proper deal available or assets from other teams to move around, the situation is unfortunately at an awkward pause. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver explained why the league is not too happy about it. He said, “I don’t know whether he requested a trade or demanded one, frankly. This needs to be a two-way street.”
“Teams provide enormous security and guarantees to players, and the expectation in return is that they’ll meet their end of the bargain. I’m realistic that there’s always conversations going on behind closed doors between players and their representatives and the teams. But we don’t like to see players requesting trades, and we don’t like to see it playing out the way it is.” He also made a point saying it affects others player around the league. Silver claims that the authorities are trying to find a remedy to avoid such situations.
