Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins is nearing a return to the team and is expected to be back early this week, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday. Wiggins last played on February 14 against the Washington Wizards and went on to miss 22 consecutive games citing personal reasons.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania tweeted that the reason behind Wiggins’ prolonged absence was his father Mitchell Wiggins’ medical illness. Wiggins was in Canada attending to his father and hence, missed a lot of games. The All-Star is expected to be in the Bay Area in less than 24 hours and plans to attend the Warriors- Thunder Game.

Warriors coach, Steve Kerr said that Wiggins has been working out every day while away from the team, but as he returns to the team’s facilities, the training and medical staff would evaluate his fitness and conditioning to determine how soon he would be able to return to play. He’s averaging 17.1 points and 5.0 rebounds this season while shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc.

Steph Curry highlighted Andrew Wiggins’ importance to the team

The Golden State Warriors created history on June 16, 2022, by defeating the Boston Celtics and winning their 4th Championship in 8 years. Although it was a Steph Curry shooting clinic throughout the series, the Warriors wouldn’t be where they were if not for Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins finished the NBA Finals as the leading rebounder, blocker, and second-highest scorer for the Warriors after averaging 18.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.

Wiggins signed a contract extension with the Warriors in October 2022. Last week, Steph Curry spoke of Wiggins’ importance to the Warriors.

The Warriors are currently placed sixth in the Western Conference with a record of 41-38. With three games remaining, the Golden State Warriors are finding their complete roster at the right time with the recent return of Gary Payton II and Andrew Wiggins.
