Jackson in particular isn't impressed with Davis' boxing skills.

Latest Los Angeles Lakers sensation Austin Reaves joined former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on their ‘All the Smoke’ podcast recently. He spoke about his team’s up-and-down performance in the 2022-23 NBA season, what it’s like guarding Steph Curry, and the experience of playing with players like Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis, among other discussions.

While asking Reaves about what it’s like to play with an elite big man such as Anthony Davis, Jackson was quick to cut Barnes off and call Davis the ‘worst boxer you’ve ever seen’. This is in reference to a video that circulated online a couple of weeks back where Davis is seen trying his hand at boxing along with boxer Jalen Walker.

As expected, fans were quick to pounce on Davis for practicing boxing with many of them holding their breath, hoping that Davis does not injure himself, something that has become a regular affair with Davis. He played in 56 games last season averaging 25.9 points and 12.5 rebounds per game and took the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals where they were swept by the eventual champion, the Denver Nuggets.

There’s no doubt about the talent that Davis possesses. The only issue he has faced and continues to face today is his injury problems. When healthy, Davis is easily a top-5 player in the league, providing offense as well as rim protection and easily averaging a double-double on a nightly basis. As his current teammate Austin Reaves said, “He’s obviously a good person to have on your team, especially defensively, I don’t think he gets enough credit for what he does for us as guards. He’s arguably right behind Bron as the most skilled player I’ve ever seen.”

Davis is expected to sign a new contract before training camp starts

As per NBA insider Dave McMenamin, Anthony Davis will get a contract extension before the start of the 2023-24 season. He is eligible for a three-year extension worth around $167 million. Davis had initially signed a five-year, $190 million contract with the Lakers back in December 2020, after they won the championship in the Bubble in Orlando.

The Lakers would definitely want to secure the services of their big man for the long-term keeping in mind that LeBron James would be turning 39 this year and there is no guarantee on whether he will play another year after next season. The Lakers have also done a terrific job in adding some fresh faces to the squad, such as Gabe Vincent, Taurean Prince, Jaxon Hayes, and Cam Reddish while re-signing D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura.

If Davis can finally remain healthy next season, he might just carry the Lakers to their 17th NBA Championship.
