“We are white and don’t really look athletic,” Austin Reaves overlooks all comparisons with Alex Caruso
Lakers star Austin Reaves makes a hilarious comparison to former Lakers player Alex Caruso
Austin Reaves and Alex Caruso
In Los Angeles, Austin Reaves has established quite a name for himself. He played in college for four years before being undrafted in 2021. But the former first-teamer for the Big 12 wasn’t about to let his aspirations of playing basketball go away. At the conclusion of the summer, he inked a two-way contract with the Lakers, which was later upgraded to a full NBA contract.
He quickly started to assert himself in his role on the floor. Reaves ended up getting a significant increase in minutes as he kept proving himself. He has participated in 61 games by the end of the previous season. During that span, he played 28.9 minutes per game and averaged 10.8 points on 48.8% of his shots. Comparisons with former Lakers guard Alex Caruso, who also went undrafted, keep coming up as he sees higher averages overall. He talked about their parallels and differences in a recent interview with HoopsHype.
Speaking on the matter, Reaves said, “Totally different players, but we’re guys that played on the Lakers, and we’re white. We don’t really look athletic. He’s athletic, but I’m not that athletic. I can see why people do it, but we’re two totally different players.”
Reaves’ remark is really funny, and it’s probably the reason the former Lakers guard is frequently compared to him. Although their playing styles are quite dissimilar, Reaves points out that they both played for the Los Angeles Lakers and are white. The parallels between the two stop there for most part. Perhaps, this will put an end to the parallels, but given their obvious distinctions, it’s likely that Reaves will still be compared with Caruso.
Austin Reaves’ injury update
Despite a promising start to the season, Reaves’ most recent injury has significantly slowed down his progress in his sophomore year. Reaves participated in the Lakers’ victory over the Miami Heat on January 4 but was unable to play the next night due to a hamstring issue.
Reaves’ return is now extremely close, according to Lakers head coach Darvin Ham, who made the announcement on Thursday. In fact, the 24-year-old might return to the lineup as early as Saturday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans without Zion Williamson. Ham claims that Reaves has a possibility of suiting up on Saturday.
LeBron James, like other Lakers supporters, will no doubt be pleased to hear about this development. It’s excellent news for the team. Now that Reaves will return, LA has a chance to finally be injury-free and have a greater chance of making the playoffs
