With multiple trade requests being made by the likes of NBA players, such as Damian Lillard and James Harden, it becomes important to see whether these trades are good or bad for the league and whether these trades leave the league competitive or not. On the recent episode of the ‘Off Guard’ podcast, Austin Rivers talks about these recent trade requests being made by the players and how it might impact their legacies.
Talking about how NBA is a privilege for players and that they should not take it for granted, he said “If you are a free agent then you can choose where you go, that’s the business. If you get traded somewhere, you have got to go play. …This started with James and Ben and all these guys doing this s–t. It’s bad for the league.” This comes after Lillard has requested a trade out of Portland to the Miami Heat and James Harden has requested one out of Philadelphia to the Clippers.
Reportedly, Lillard’s agent has requested teams other than the Miami Heat to trade him because they would then be acquiring an ‘unhappy player.’ Rivers though maintained this stance of him not being happy seeing stars force their way out of a team when they’ve already signed contracts binding them and their future to a particular team.

Damian Lillard and James Harden trade updates
As players from Miami consider Damian already on their team, there has been no official communication from Portland or Miami regarding the same. Miami, though, is yet to make a satisfactory offer to the Blazers, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. Currently, Lillard is under contract with the Blazers till the 2024-25 season and will have a player option to extend it to the 2025-26 season.
For James Harden, though, the trade request has not progressed much. Daryl Morey, president of the 76ers, talked about how they would not trade unless they get a very good player in return. As James Harden has removed the team name from his Twitter and Instagram bios, it becomes evidently clear that he has no intentions of staying in the team even though he has activated the player option and is going to receive his salary for this season for the 76ers.
The comments made by Rivers make sense to the fans on social media but will eventually hold little value as trades continue to go forward and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. What the Minnesota Timberwolves free agent said regarding the Combined Bargaining Agreement might continue to be true. “You either make $50 million or $2 (million). It’s a scary dynamic. ”
