The Giannis Antetokounmpo game ball saga has not ended yet. Analysts and fans all over the world are torn between the decision the Indiana Pacers took and what Antetokounmpo wanted.
This dilemma was presented in front of Dallas Mavericks head honcho Mark Cuban. Cuban had a different take on what Antetokounmpo thought was correct. Cuban thinks what the Pacers did for their rookie player Oscar Tshiebwe was something they have already done in the past for other rookies. Speaking to TMZ, Cuban said:
If you have a rookie who's never scored before in an NBA game, that's a big deal that only happens once.
Cuban says that if the decision were up to him, he would have given it to the rookie. He continues to mention that Antetokounmpo could have offered an exchange with Tshiebwe. But it was still up to Tshiebwe to decide what to do with the game ball.
Mark Cuban also takes into account the career night Giannis Antetokounmpo had. Cuban laid out an alternative on what could be given to Antetokounmpo for his franchise-record night. He thought the Milwaukee Bucks players could have signed and framed the box score to commemorate Antetokounmpo’s accomplishment. For a 2 time MVP and NBA champion, he already has enough game balls and accolades which the rookie might not have in his career.
Cuban believed getting 64 points is unquestionably an extremely rare occasion for any player in the NBA but for a rookie to get his first NBA points could only come once in the career of a rookie. Hence, the situations were different. Therefore, it would be better for the rookie as a remembrance throughout his life.
The game ball…….who wanted it vs who got it
The entire saga regarding the game ball went on for almost an hour after the Indiana Pacers vs Milwaukee Bucks game. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 64 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a career night for the two-time MVP. The Bucks beat the Pacers 140 – 126 behind Antetokounmpo’s franchise-record outing.
Naturally, Antetokounmpo wanted the game ball. Even after it seemed that the Bucks staff got hold of the game ball, the Pacers decided it would be theirs to take. After tunnel altercations and arguments on the court, all players parted ways. Antetokounmpo said in the post-match press conference that he doesn’t think the ball he has with him is the game ball.
What transpired between the final whistle to the post-game press conference is still up for debate. Cuban believes nevertheless it should have been the home team who gets to decide who should be given the ball.
