Brian Scalabrine, the former Boston Celtics star, recently sat down with Kevin Garnett on Garnett’s podcast KG: Certified. According to Brian, the 2008 Celtics were the greatest defensive team in NBA history. The Boston team, led by the trio of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen won the last Celtics championship in 2008 against the Kobe Bryant led Los Angeles Lakers.
In conversation with Garnett, Scalabrine said, “We were the greatest defensive team to ever play.” However, as convincing as it might appear, Garnett hesitated to agree with his former teammate. “You think so? One of ’em,” Garnett responded. Scalabrine however, doubled down and said, “The (greatest defensive team ever).”
The 2008 Celtics’ dominance is well-recorded in the NBA and every fan remembers it. However, not all would agree with Scalabrine’s take on the greatest defensive teams in NBA history. While the Celtics had a high defensive rating as compared to the other teams, ranking them as the greatest defensive team in the NBA historically could be debated.
Scalabrine had a successful NBA career, playing 11 seasons in the league. He spent 5 seasons with the Boston Celtics and won a championship with them in 2008. Brian shot over 34% from the 3-point line and averaged 3.1 points per game during his career.

Brian Scalabrine draws a comparison between the 2022-23 and the 2007-08 Boston Celtics team
Statistically and otherwise the Jayson Tatum-led 2022-23 Boston Celtics are the number-one team in the league this season. With a 21-5 record so far into the season, they also have the highest odds to win the championship this season. Just like the 2008 Boston Celtics, 2022 Celtics are also among the top teams in defense. Brian says in terms of dominance, there is no substantial difference between the two teams except one, and that is a championship.
The Celtics finished their 2007-08 season with a 66-16 record in the regular season. Their record was better by a considerable margin than other teams in the league. Eventually, the Celtics put an exclamation mark on their 2008 season with a championship by defeating Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals. Paul Pierce was declared the Finals MVP.
