The Met Gala is one of the most iconic and popular events around the world. Celebrities from all walks of life make an appearance at the event. Considered one of the biggest fashion events in the world, the Met Gala features popular icons in their most innovative outfits. The prestigious event is held on the first Monday of the month of May every year and, as of 2023, was conducted on May 1st.
The charity event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute was bound to have personalities from the world of basketball. The NBA players who featured in this year’s Met Gala were Dwyane Wade, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Russell Westbrook. From the WNBA, Brittney Griner made her Met Gala debut along with her wife Cherelle Griner. Britney just came out of her time served in a Russian prison. However, her outfit for the grand event didn’t leave the best of impressions.
Brittney Griner, ahead of her arrest, played for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA. In February 2022, Griner was arrested on charges related to drugs and was detained for a 10-month period. Her detention time was predominantly served in prison. Her arrest also unfolded during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and escalated tensions between the United States and Russia. After all, the arrest of an eight-time WNBA All-Star was bound to be quite an issue for the White House.
Although she served ten months in prison, Griner was released on December 08, 2022, following a prisoner exchange between the two countries. Since then, she has made quite a few public appearances and has enjoyed her freedom alongside her wife. On Monday evening, she made her Met Gala debut in an all-beige outfit. She wore a beige sweatshirt with an overcoat and beige trousers.

Basketball fans on Twitter haven’t really been impressed with any of the outfits players wore today. In fact, they expressed their disappointment by coming down hard on the players. While Russell Westbrook was popularly said to have looked like a piano, Griner hasn’t received a lot of praise either. While some might consider people’s comments harsh, many have been calling them jokes at Griner’s monotoned beige outfit. However, she looked quite happy in her outfit, standing in front of the paparazzi with her wife, who was also in a gorgeous white dress. However, coming back to basketball after her release, Griner re-signed with her previous team, the Phoenix Mercury. While the 2023 WNBA comes closer, she would look to make a phenomenal comeback to the league. Moreover, she would further look to redeem herself from her unfortunate arrest in Russia.
