“I’m a girl…in the right bathroom” Brittney Griner spoke about how she defeated her toughest insecurities
Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner is undoubtedly a generational and unique talent in WNBA’s history. She is a champion and has a stacked resume with multiple personal records, achievements and honors registered under her name. She also has a list of achievements for the time she spent overseas playing basketball. But still, life is not and was never easy for Brittney Griner. As she was never really accepted by the society for her body and size and always had to live with insecurities. She deserved none of those unnecessary looks, takes and actions of the people but had to go through all of them even though she is a decorated athlete.
Brittney Griner has also faced a lot of trouble in identifying herself as a woman. As most of the time, people would think her to be a man due to her appearance. She even revealed some of the many unfortunate stories she has had during ESPN the Magazine’s sixth annual “Body Issue” (in a follow up interview). Speaking about Gender Identity Brittney Griner quoted: “I got called a boy all the time. Going into the bathroom, I still get the shocked look, like, “Are you supposed to be in here?” But I’m so used to it now, I’m just like, “I’m a girl, I’m in the right bathroom.” In China, it happens all the time! One time when I went into the bathroom there, a lady was so shocked that she was pushing me out; she was so hysterically shocked that I was in there. I couldn’t do anything but laugh. I didn’t even try to defend myself and tell her I was a girl. I ended up just going over to the men’s room and went into one of the stalls. I’ve even had to do that in the States a couple of times.”
Further talking about taking steps to have no one but at least herself comfortable, Brittney Griner added: “Coming out to my parents helped. I gave myself little steps I would do, and each time I got good feedback-or I didn’t get any feedback, which was good, because nobody really cared. Just little steps. Like in ninth grade, I decided I’m just going to dress how I want to dress. And I was like, ‘Man, this would’ve been so easy if I would’ve just did it earlier.’”
Brittney Griner has always been insecured about her arrest, body, size and gender identity. But things weren’t that bad in the last few years. She also became the first openly gay athlete to be endorsed by Nike. But right now the problem she is stuck in is something very unexpected. As she is a political prisoner in Russia for months and now even pleaded guilty for the drugs smuggling charges (officials found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage) which have got her booked for 9 years.
When will Brittney Griner return to American Soil?
Brittney Griner should have been back on American soil long back ago. Even efforts were made to bring her back but none of those worked. Joe Biden though has promised the country that he’ll get her back on American soil as soon as possible since even he was furious at the sentence announced for BG and called it unacceptable and demanded immediate release. But that’s not how things in Russia work so the two countries right now are negotiating a prisoner swap deal. But the Vladimir Putin government has brought in an unreal demand. Russia has requested U.S.A to add convicted murderer Vadim Krasikov in the deal for the prisoner swap of Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan along with Viktor Bout. Those are some seriously big names who are also a threat to world security. So predicting or even claiming her return is not possible yet.
