Brittney Griner is still not back on the American soil and is stuck in Russia. The Biden Administration has claimed her to be wrongfully detained and many around also believe that the WNBA superstar is held as a political prisoner since February 2022. It all started with the Russian officials founding vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport (less than two grams of oil). And, now Brittney Griner has also pleaded guilty while mentioning how it was unintentionally done and she also has a medical prescription for it. But the court cared least and booked her for nine years.
The situation now though is worsening for Brittney Griner as she was recently transferred to an all-female Russian Penal colony to serve her remaining sentence. The news regarding her transfer was out for a while but her location and the final destination both were unknown for a good number of days. She was moved from the detention centre on November 4th, and her lawyers recently claimed to have visited her at a penal colony in western Russia.
“We can confirm that Brittney began serving her sentence at IK-2 in Mordovia… We visited her early this week,” said Brittney Griner’s lawyers, Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boikov in a statement. Before the statement, a U.S. State Department spokesperson mentioned how Russia didn’t notify USA about Brittney Griner’s transfer.
As the spokesperson said: “We are aware of reports of her location, and in frequent contact with Ms. Griner’s legal team. However, the Russian Federation has still failed to provide any official notification for such a move of a U.S. citizen, which we strongly protest.”
Life for Brittney Griner is going to be very tough at the penal colony in Mordovia. As she’ll be going through a very tough phase and will be forced to work for long hours and perform labor. She can be expected to do tasks like making clothes, washing clothes and even construction work. Also, Mordovia is the same region where Paul Whelan who was accused of Espionage is serving his sentence.
When will Brittney Griner be back?
It’s not possible for anyone to claim or predict anything about Brittney Griner’s return. The Biden Administration has been making a lot of efforts to get her back and even many different organizations and fans have come out to show their love and support for her. But so far none of it has worked and all those efforts are just wasted.
Biden Administration though is still trying to get Brittney Griner back as soon as possible. The talks regarding a prisoner swap to get back both the American citizens are in progress for quite a while now but Russia had some unreal demands earlier. And, Mr. President believes Russia now would be more serious about the talks. As he said: “My hope is that now that the election is over, that Mr. Putin will be able to discuss with us and be willing to talk more seriously about a prisoner exchange.”
