All about Brittney Griner’s basketball career and her detainment in Russia

After graduating from Baylor University in 2013, Brittney Griner was selected in the first round by the Phoenix Mercury, where she has consistently excelled as a team player. Among the best WNBA players ever, the 31-year-old was selected as one of the top 25 players in league history in 2021. In 2012, she captured both the Player of the Year Award and a national collegiate championship. She began her professional career playing for the US women’s national basketball team, and since then, she has won a WNBA title, two Olympic gold medals, and two more. Griner made history when she signed with Nike to start her professional sporting career because she was the first out gay athlete to do so.

Russian authorities have been keeping a close eye on Brittney Griner ever since she was detained on February 17 at Sheremetyevo International Airport on suspicion of having illegal vape cartridges containing hashish oil. Griner plays internationally during the WNBA summer to increase her salary and develop her performance, like many other female basketball players. Griner was for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League at the time of her arrest. Despite the fact that her attorneys had appealed the decision in August since cannabis oil is illegal in Russia, she was handed a nine-year prison term. Her lawyers state that others in Russia received a shorter term and even parole for this same offense.

Griner and her atrocious prison conditions

Brittney Griner is presently completing her sentence inside a pre-trial detention facility, which is a “nightmare” Russian prison colony situated one hour outside of Moscow, according to Griner’s attorney, Alexandr D. Boykov. Griner and two other English-speaking inmates who are also detained on drug-related charges share a small cell. Only two showers a week are supposedly permitted for the prisoners. The idea that prisoners must spend 23 hours a day in their cell is even more disturbing. According to reports, Griner is permitted to leave her cell once daily to stroll around a tiny courtyard. He also said that Griner reads and plays a board game comparable to Battleship the majority of the time.

The facility where Brittney Griner is being detained is most likely far better than the one where Paul Whelan, another Marine, is being held, according to Trevor Reed, a former marine who was imprisoned in Russia. Talking in an interview, he said If he could give the prisoners any advice, it would be to try to never forget how many people are rooting for them. As American officials work to bring Griner and Whelan back home, Reed urged them to persist and hold onto their faith. As of right now, not much has changed about the WNBA star’s release, but we hope to learn more about her anticipated release from jail and return to the United States shortly.
